Compression only CPR works

..another study tells it like it is, this one, from JAMA.

This isn’t the first bit of evidence that says so, either. Yet every year I have to go and be ‘refreshed’ in the finer points of CPR. We have to pay lots of this, and it is becoming silly – for the last three years I’ve asked why we aren’t being taught on the latest evidence. If institutions (and there are many) are going earn money from guidelines, they have a responsibility to make sure they are up to date.

No blow CPR may well be the way to go (because more people will attempt it, and maybe any CPR helps) but that JAMA study has more holes in it than a sieve. Just for starters: it is not randomised…

here’s the two NEJM rcts, and while I agree that the latest in JAMA isn’t as robust, I don’t think that the previous recommendations were built on very good evidence either….

Compression only is better than no CPR – wowsers! Shocking. As humans we are designed to breathe oxygen and as such when we don’t get it, our brain dies within a short space of time. Its called CPR for a reason, also, isn’t it strange how it goes ABC…why bother then with A&B then? The number of victims of pre-hospital cardiac arrest whom I have cared for in the ICU who have had CPR vastly outweighs those who have not, usually because they are dead! How can you do an RCT on a life saving procedure? Who decides then to perform mouth to mouth and not fully resuscitate someone…paging Dr Harold Shipman!!
