I have just fund your blog again after a time. It is great to catch up on what you have been doing. Your latest posting is very close to my heart. In Scotland we have the ECS (the SCR in England), which was not initially very secure or well monitored, but is a lot better now. However our current biggest threat to patient confidentiality comes from Sci Store. This system has the laboratory results, blood tests, microbiology and Xray results of every patient in Glasgow and Clyde, potentially over 1.1million records. GPs can only access results for their own patients, but hospital wards have access to every patient in the system and there are very weak controls to monitor access. These records contain more information than ECS, they are open to thousands of NHS employees and are hardly regulated. How many patients signed up for that. I do not believe it has ever been publicised in any way. It is not even possible to opt out of it in the same way a patient can opt out of ECS. It would be a scandal waiting to happen apart from the fact that it is so poorly monitored that it is unlikely that any inappropriate accesses will ever be noticed.
    Keep blooging
